Amuru District is seeking Shs150 billion to fix the course of River Unyama which has caused flooding in Elegu Town Council.

Kilak North County Member of Parliament, Hon. Anthony Akol who made the appeal during the sitting of the House on Tuesday, 05 August 2025 said the flooding has become a yearly disaster, displacing residents, destroying property and leading to the spread of cholera.

He added Elegu, a border town with South Sudan contributes significantly to the tax revenue rendering it urgent for government to intervene.
“The project, initially planned under Trade Mark Africa requires Shs150 billion yet the tax collected from Elegu is far much bigger than the funds needed,” he said.

He said that the most recent floods which began last week have left many traders devastated.
“Goods have been washed away, vehicles destroyed and the business community is struggling. They need financial support to recover,” Akol added.

The MP called for immediate relief support including food, clean water, medical aid and cholera treatment for the affected residents.

Hon. Anywar

The Minister of State for Environment, Hon. Beatrice Anywar acknowledged that the recurring floods are made worse by congestion and environmental degradation in the area.
“Elegu has long faced flooding issues. The town is congested and environmentally degraded. We must act to prevent further degradation,” she said promising to deliver safe drinking water urgently.

Hon. Muhanga

Minister of State for Primary Healthcare, Hon. Margaret Muhanga also committed to send health teams to address the cholera outbreak.
She emphasized the need for hygiene awareness and sanitation campaigns in the flood-affected areas.
